Sassoon Dock Colaba — Inside Mumbai’s Oldest Fish Market | Priyanka Sea Foods

Before sunrise, when most of Mumbai still sleeps, Sassoon Dock in Colaba is already alive with energy. It’s one of the city’s oldest and busiest fish markets — a place where the Arabian Sea meets tradition and hard work.

The Dock That Never Sleeps

By 3 AM, fishing boats start arriving with fresh catches of Pomfret, Surmai, Bombil, and Prawns. The air fills with the sounds of shouting vendors, ice being crushed, and crates being sorted. It’s organized chaos — and the heart of Mumbai’s seafood trade.

The Fishermen’s Voices

“We live by the tide,” says Ramesh Bhagat, a third-generation fisherman from Colaba.
“Some days the sea is kind, some days it’s not. But we go because this is what we know.”

For many families here, fishing isn’t just a job — it’s their identity. The women, known for their sharp bargaining and fast sorting, are as essential to the trade as the men who go to sea.

The Changing Sea

Modern challenges like unpredictable weather, rising costs, and plastic pollution are affecting daily catches. Yet, the resilience of Sassoon Dock’s community keeps Mumbai fed with the freshest seafood every day.

“Even when the sea is rough, we never give up,” says Sushila Tai, a vendor who’s been selling prawns here for over two decades.
